Sarveswara Rao

TShe death of Bhavaraju Sarveswara Rao on 23 September 2010 at the age of 95 marks the end of a signifi cant era in the annals of higher education, particularly in Andhra Pradesh. Since the mid-1930s, when he entered Andhra University as a student till his last breath, Sarveswara Rao remained a true academic, upholding the highest traditions of teaching and research with an impeccable record of personal integrity and professional excellence. Sarveswara Rao came to the limelight in 1938 as president of the Andhra University Students Union. His PhD thesis on India’s balance of payments from the University of Cambridge (1950-53) remained an important reference source for several years.

In his long and distinguished career Sarveswara Rao held several important posts and positions both in India and abroad. He was economic advisor to the government of Eastern Nigeria, founder director, Agro-economic Research Centre, dean of the arts faculty at Andhra University and vice chancellor of the Acharya Nagarjuna University. He presided over the Andhra Pradesh and Indian Economic Associations. The economics department of Andhra University, with Sarveswara Rao as its head, pioneered programmes in mathematical economics, economics of education and welfare economics, among others. Despite all his travels he remained anchored to Andhra University throughout his life and continued his association even after his retirement.
