Globalising Western Medicine

From Western Medicine to Global Medicine: The Hospital Beyond the West edited by Mark Harrison, Margaret Jones and Helen Sweet

Globalising Western Medicine

Mridula Ramanna

he focus of this edited volume is the hospital – the institution which symbolised western medicine – l ocated in different non-western countries. The introduction by Mark Harrison explicates the aim of the volume: to explore the history of societies and institutions that differed as much from each other as from those of Europe and North America. H arrison raises very significant questions; the importance and organisation of hospitals in the healthcare systems, the role of governments, the aspirations of physicians, the needs of the political economy, comparisons between hospitals in colonial and post-colonial countries and those in countries which had retained their independence from colonial rule, like Japan and Iran. While there are peculiar cultural and economic factors affecting the growth of these institutions, Harrison suggests that it is difficult to generalise about their evolution. The chapters are arranged differently in the volume, but the review here would deal with them region-wise.
