Asked about his greatest virtue, Marx replied, “singleness of purpose”. Jyoti Basu could say that as well.

In his case that purpose was to advance the left movement in India strictly within the existing constitutional framework, shunning all “adventurist” (as he saw them) attempts at revolution. He pursued this goal with great persistence, pragmatism and ruthlessness, building an Indian model of social democratic rule that privileges stability of government power over turbulence of mass movements.
