On Moti Nandi

The eminent Bengali sports journalist and writer, Moti Nandi, passed away on 3 January at the age of 79. He changed the face of Bengali sports journalism. The less popular games like athletics, swimming, kabaddi and kho kho found equal importance in his writings. His sports-related fiction, reflecting his experience about the trials and tribulations of sportspersons, made him a household name in Bengal. His novel Sada Kham received the Sahitya Academy Award in 1991.

Nandi considered himself to be a “twelfth man” (who remained outside the team) and saw the world from outside. In fact, “twelfth man” was his philosophy of looking at life.
