Deena Khatkhate (EPW, 3 January 2009) mentions Ashutosh Mukherjee as the founder of Dacca University (p 24). On the contrary, he was totally against starting a second university in Bengal and “opposed the Government of India Resolution regarding the establishment of a university in Dacca tooth and nail” (Conversation with Abdur Razzaq by S F Karim, Shaitya Prakash, Dhaka 2000). Dacca University was started in 1921, not 1922, by an act of the central legislature. This is significant because the relationship between the two universities was never cordial, which in turn created problems for serious scholars. Ashutosh Mukherjee actually used to take great exception when any scholar left Calcutta University to join the new university at Dacca (Karim, p 34).
