Assessing Academic Performance

Geetha Venkataraman’s article on the UGC Proposal (EPW, 28 March 2009) points to the difficulties in quantifying the performance of academics. How such quantification can turn into a “numbers game” to accumulate performance points as easily as the system allows is well brought out.

I would like to briefly cite two unsuccessful instances of similar attempts to programme and quantify professional and academic performance elsewhere.
