Monopolising Periyar

Monopolising Periyar No individual or organisation should have exclusive rights over the publication of Periyar

In a recent statement, K Veeramani, the general secretary of the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK), has claimed that the “intellectual property rights” of Periyar E V Ramasamy’s writings and speeches rest with the Periyar Self-Respect Propaganda Institute which he heads. He has warned that anyone who reproduces them would be liable to prosecution. In other words, Veeramani is seeking a monopoly over Periyar’s intellectual and political labour of over half a century which radically transformed the political common sense of the state.

It is indeed a long-standing political tradition in Tamil Nadu that different publishers of Periyarist political and social persuasions freely publish Periyar’s works. This has ensured a constant circulation of his writings and speeches in the Tamil public sphere. Most often those who publish Periyar’s works are smalltime publishers with meagre resources. It is their political commitment which drives them to publication.
