Contemporary History

Ramachandra Guha’s article ‘The Challenge of Contemporary History’ (June 28, 2008) has been like a fresh lease of life to the dwindling community of historians and doomed discipline of history. Historical research in India is suffering from an acute stagnation and reiteration.

The domain of contemporary history has been hijacked by various disciplines of social sciences and journalism. Contemporary historical writings and historical discourse have either merged with or are located in sociology, political science and journalism.
