On December 13, 2001, five armed persons stormed the Parliament House Complex at New Delhi, and in the ensuing confrontation, the security personnel shot dead all of them. Eight security personnel and a gardener also died in the exchange of fire. This triggered an investigation that spanned 17 days. The investigation claimed the involvement of four more persons in the incident. One of them, Mohammed Afzal Guru, was awarded capital punishment, which was confirmed by the Supreme Court on August 4, 2005. He has been on death row since then.
