GPD and Hindu Liberals

GP Deshpande (GPD) has taken Hindu liberals off the hook for their gutless response to the rise of Hindu neo-fascism. In the last paragraph of his piece, ‘Moditva and the Shrinking of the Liberal Space’ (January 5, 2008), he has accused Muslim and Christian liberals of not being active enough in the Taslima and Da Vinci Code cases – thereby helping the rise of Moditva. It is ridiculous and morally perverse to equate the Taslima and Da Vinci episodes with the massacre and subsequent hounding of Muslims in Gujarat under Modi.

GPD has also urged Muslim and Christian liberals to “preserve their space in the context of what concerns their communities” in order to assist the survival of the Hindu liberal space. His argument fragments liberalism into an apartheid of separate communal spaces and weakens the challenge to Hindu extremism.
