The article ‘On Judging Mayawati’ by Chittibabu Padavala (August 18) has highlighted some important problems facing Mayawati. Actually, what Mayawati is confronting is the powerful hegemony of neoliberalism. In an era of neoliberalism, what kind of power can be given to the dalits in Uttar Pradesh (UP)? The welfare state concept has disappeared. Yet, dalit expectations are so high from Mayawati.

The welfare state concept has disappeared. Yet, dalit expectations are so high from Mayawati.
Mayawati has to draw up new cultural, social, economic and political programmes for the dalits and other subaltern sections of UP. Her demand for affirmative action in the private sector did not much help the poor dalits for whom a new land distribution policy is an imperative. Can this be achieved? All the state governments are wooing foreign and Indian capital.
