State Captive to Private Interests

This is a personal response to the arrest of Binayak Sen, a committed medical practitioner and civil rights activist, by the Chhattisgarh state government under specific sections of the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2005 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2004. His detention is cause for both outrage and anguish, and reveals the insensitivity of the executive – comprising its political, civil, and police arms – that is determined to crush the initiatives of extraordinary individuals whose idealism and social concern motivate them to voice the tribulations of the oppressed.

The scenario in Chhattisgarh is one where the state has failed miserably to provide employment, food security, healthcare, and education to the underclass at large, including in particular the adivasi population in districts such as Dantewara and Bastar.
