This refers to Amartya Sen’s ‘Our Past and Our Present’ (November 25, 2006).
Ramachandra Guha’s review of Sen’s The Argumentative Indian was as good as the book, if not better. It also perhaps was the only critical review of the book. Most foreign reviews of the book were rather effusive. They had nothing interesting or contrary to say. Reviews of Sen’s Identity and Violence have been more interesting. For example, Fouad Ajami in Washington Post Book World had this to say: “Inspirational history can go only so far, it will not bend to Sen’s good cheer”.
