SAFTA: Uncertain Gains

Uncertain Gains After years of waiting and anticipation, south Asia has finally put in place a regional free trade agreement. The South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA), which was drawn up at the 12th South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Islamabad in January 2004, became operational on January 1, 2006. SAFTA is essentially a trade liberalisation programme for manufactured products and commodities that envisages tariff reductions to the level of 0-5 per cent among the SAARC members
