Tensions in Development The recent violence in the Haryana town of Gohana, presents once again, in a microcosm, the tensions when tradition and custom begin to loosen under the impact of modernisation and political mobilisation. While the incidents in Gohana, barely 100 kms from the national capital, Delhi, were fuelled by inherent tensions of caste that periodically rock Haryana and other states, they also reflect the changing balances of social and economic power among the castes of the region.
