Emerging Cityscapes and Environmental Issues

The damage inflicted by the July floods could have been minimal if, in the preparation of development plans for Mumbai, the existing contours and natural features of the city had been taken into consideration. However, in Mumbai, the pressure for space has led to land gaining a greater prominence over landforms. Planners, developers and governing authorities must be guided by existing geomorphic features for further reclamation programmes.
