Rail-Road Competition in Freight Transportation

This paper compares cost, price and service quality aspects of rail and road freight transport services. Costs and prices of both the modes are studied and generalised costs have been used to take service quality parameters into account. It establishes that while rail services have an advantage over road on a pure transport cost basis over medium to long distances; on a generalised cost basis, however, road transport has an advantage even over long distances.
