Agriculture: Progress Report

Progress Report Advance estimates of the CSO indicate that growth in agricultural and allied activities in 2004-05 will hover around 1.1 per cent (at 1993-94 prices), as compared to the 9.6 per cent recorded in the previous year. Although the jump in growth rates in 2003-04 does appear exceptional due to the poor performance in 2002-03, an uneven monsoon and lower output in the kharif season in 2004-05 have ensured that foodgrain production for the year, for instance, falls far short of the target. Rabi estimates though have been revised upwards and thus total foodgrain production has been raised from 206m to 210m tonnes but is again much lower than the annual target of 225m.
