Why have such a large number of inconsistencies crept in on the prices of medicines over the many years? And why are prices of essential and necessary drugs hitting the roof? Ram Vilas Paswan, the minister for chemicals and fertilisers appears to be grappling with the Herculean task of cleaning the Augean stables. Commendable as the intention is, not much can be gained unless he is prepared to take the long and more arduous road to change by working through and strengthening the agencies that the government itself has set up for the precise tasks and building a political consensus around the issues.
