Split Dalit Votes The results of the recent 14th Lok Sabha elections in Punjab were almost an exact reverse of the 1999 elections when the Congress had trounced the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP combine. That year, a resurgent Congress, wiped out in the 1998 elections, came roaring back, winning eight of 13 seats. This time the Congress won merely two, while the rest 11 were sewn up between the BJP-SAD combine (SAD-8, BJP-3).
