Iwas a little reluctant to write about my sense of loss at the death of Krishna Raj since so many people must have known him more closely than I did although my acquaintance stretched back over three decades or more. Although I met him only rarely after I left Bombay in the late 1960s, I looked forward to his generous comments and friendly greetings whenever I sent in an article to EPW. All the reminiscences mention his charm, unfailing politeness, and unobtrusive style. He also showed considerable finesse in dealing with the inevitable ego problems and rough edges of some of the contributors, or would-be contributors, to the EPW. But there is one achievement which I think has not received equal attention although it is reflected in the outpouring of letters to the journal after he died. That is the sense of co-ownership which subscribers came to feel towards the journal. The EPW was
