WTO Agreement on SPS

The benefit of liberalisation in the processed food sector could be undermined by the protectionist use of sanitary and phytosanitary measures by some countries. India needs to evolve a two-pronged approach: to improve quality standards and initiate domestic reforms in the food sector, and to have a strategy in place to renegotiate discriminatory provisions at WTO forums in association with other developing countries.
