Sports : Who Is in Charge?

The admission of the central ministry of sports that the Indian sports scene is severely affected by the problem of performance enhancing drugs is not so much a surprise in itself as a pointer to the state of disrepair in the sector. Monitoring the performance of athletes is among the very primary tasks undertaken by regional and state sporting bodies and if the fact that Indian athletic performance has been affected by such practices has come to official light only now, it brings into question the health of the country’s whole structure of sports. This also throws into perspective the centre’s move to transfer sports from the state list to the concurrent list.
