Status of Children : Dismal Progress

In 1990 India was one of the 71 countries at the first World Summit on Children in 1990 where it committed itself to signing the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) the following year. As a first step, CRC set up certain objectives, the realisation of which signatories would strive for over the 1990s. These were reducing mortality and malnutrition among children under five; bringing down maternal mortality rates; improving adult literacy rates; universalising access to basic education and to safe drinking water and sanitary conditions.
