Opportunities for Science Careers in India

A science career in India is like the mad hatter's tea party in Alice in Wonderland, you cannot find the place in the first instance, when by some chance you do find it the people already at the table shout at you to go away, if you do manage to find a place at the table there is no tea or food going around, your companions think you are an excellent participant if you quietly fall asleep at the table, and occasionally they dunk you in a teacup for no particular reason, just for the fun of it. But it is a living of sorts... Is there any way of improving this situation?

‘Science careers’, one presumes, means the working lives of professional ‘scientists’, a word replete with connotations. A recent western survey suggests that after physicians, ‘scientists’ are the profession most respected in the community at large. Some of my colleagues in India have told me that they would much rather that their jobs be titled ‘Director’ or variants thereof than versions of either ‘Scientist’ of ‘Professor’, since it is apparently easier to get a gas cylinder or a railway ticket out of turn if you are the former, but not if you are the latter. Between those two, every point in the attitude spectrum can be found.
