The parity movement in France for equal representation of men and women in elected assemblies offers an interesting counter-example to the Indian situation. Parity in the French context should not only be reduced to an analysis of its fortune within political parties. Parity has become something of a household word today and has had an influence in transforming older feminist debates on questions of sexual difference and equality.
