Slum Demolition in Mumbai,

In the last few months rampant demolitions have taken place all over Mumbai in the name of removal of ‘illegal’ encroachments. In the process, lakhs of poor people are being uprooted from their homes and livelihood. Alternative sites, if provided at all, are without amenities and uninhabitable.

This demolition drive raises disturbing questions about the state policy for slums and the concern of the courts. The sudden frequency of court judgments in favour of demolition of ‘illegal’ structures and the state’s unwillingness to defend the rights of shelter and livelihood of the poor citizens makes one wonder whose government and whose courts these are.
