Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna is pulling out all stops to project the state as the IT industry's new El Dorado. And it isn't just ad copy either. If the turnout at the so-called global investors' meet is any indication, not only is the corporate sector aiming to return to the state but is prompting new investors. The two-day conference followed by a month-long programme of meetings, site visits and seminars drew the expected participation.

The conference offered no special concessions to investors but showcased the inherent strengths of the state. Almost all the current giants in Karnataka industry chose to focus on the state's human resource base. Both Volvo India and Infosys which have been in the state for a while pointed out that almost 90 per cent of their recruitment takes place within the state and a large proportion of those recruited are in their early 20s. The state's labour environment also came in for much praise. An interesting point made by many of the state's older corporate entities was the unanimously positive response to the state government and its machinery. Given that the state has seen four state governments, this prompts some surprise.
