Austria: Swing to the Right

Austria: Swing to the Right

.

Socialist Austria, one-time haven of labour-capital partner    ship, social security from the cradle to the grave, permanent neutrality, a Jewish chancellor respected by the Arabs (late Bruno Kreisky), has swung full circle after 30 years of steady growth and unprecedented prosperity under the domination of Socialist Party governance, seemingly harking back to its Hitlerite interlude of the 1940s. This is the extremist interpretation of the formation of a coalition government between the centre right People’s Party and the extreme right Freedom Party, which has already led to withdrawal of the Israeli ambassador, recall of the US ambassador and a call for a suspension of bilateral relations by the European Union headquarters to the 14-member countries (other than Austria).

This harsh reaction is unprecedented and unwarranted in the light of the guarantees on human rights and freedom provided by the Austrian president and the very fact of Austria following EU policies and programmes. Austria’s ostracism, without any violation of rights, is evidence of the erosion of national sovereignty in the new world order – for all except the US and its military allies. No one has condemned the US for the unwarranted handcuffing of Indian citizens with valid H-1 visas or Pakistan for organised terrorism and abetting the killing of innocent Indians in Indian territory.
