Art and Tradition The limits of artistic licence and the fine line demarcating it from the depiction of realism has, let it be admitted, always been a political issue. And the social contours of art have always been defined by the socio-political milieu. The real issue is what defines the socio-political milieu. And how is one to determine its nature in a culturally, ethnically and economically diverse society undergoing uneven modernisation? Is it to be drawn from normative, even legislative fabric? Or from the response of the entrenched remnants of the traditional social fabric to the products of artistic endeavour? Is it manifest in street protests? In mob actions?
