GUJARAT AMBUJA Expansion by Acquisition Gujarat Ambuja Cement is among the few cement majors in the country that has exploited the benefits of delicensing of the cement industry in the eighties. Even before the term core competence became a fashionable word, it put it into practice all these years. It has been adding to productive capacity, with a controlling stake in DLF Cement for Rs 350 crore in December 1999 and a 7.3 per cent stake in ACC.

Godfrey Phillips has been able to log a 12 per cent share of the market despite keen competition. This has been made possible by the introduction of new brands at regular intervals in the market, modernisation of production facilities and, of course, periodic increases in product prices.
