THE spate of suicides in large parts of the Andhra Pradesh countryside underscores the disastrous consequences of the policy of the state which allows unscrupulous private moneylenders and manufacturers to exploit the ambition of gullible farmers. Reports suggest that at least 80 farmers have committed suicide during the last two months after having failed to repay the money they borrowed from local usurers in order to invest in the cultivation of expensive cash crops.
