The Pendulum Swings BY attempting to partially restore the left- of-centre image of the Congress, and revamp the organisation in the Pachmarhi session. Sonia Gandhi and her advisors may be taking a leaf out of the old Congress book. In 1955 at the Avadi session of the party, Nehru invented the slogan of a Socialistic pattern' of society, which helped the party to win over the masses who were beginning to get disillusioned with the performance of the first post- independence Congress government, on the eve of the 1957 elections.
