Western Reporting of the Beijing Women s-Conference

Conference Jawid Laiq How sensitive is the American and British 'quality' press to global women's issues? It claims to be fair, balanced and free in its reports and comments on world news events. It summarily rejects allegations of bias, prejudice, sensationalism, trivialisation and selectivity. These claims and allegations were tested by surveying reports and comments on the Beijing World Conference on Women and the accompanying NGO meet held in August-September 1995. Five publications controlled by US and British interests, with a wide circulation around the globe, and reputed to be serious and well-regarded journals, were surveyed.
