In these advertisements, as I have shown, the nation is perceived as distinctively male. In its metaphoric metamorphosis as the virile male body it is under attack by a multiplicity of forces at different levels. One of the most dangerous and recent of these is AIDS. My argument is that by constructing the nation in this particular way. the state is certainly able to channel 'patriotic' sentiment and emotion in a new direction: towards the control of AIDS. The sheer tangibility of the image of the male body threatened allows for the evocation of such feeling.
