On Death Penalty

ROWENA ROBINSON'S worrying piece on the BJP (July 5) makes interesting reading. It refreshingly notes what is too often forgotten: how normal, ordinary attitudes among the apolitical and well-meaning people and the educated classes are shifting ground in contemporary India, especially about giving the BJP a chance. I simply wish to extend the argument. What is true about anti- Muslim feelings is also true about feelings against other (subordinate) categories such as OBCs, SC/STs and women. The antipathy against these groups does not always have the same intensity as against the Muslims but it is there. It surfaces with intensity from time to time. In fact, anti-Muslim feelings are only an extreme in the continuum of hate among the upper caste, male, propertied classes against all the emerging groups challenging their welI-entrenched hegemony.
