gears up to take over the reins of power from Us coalition partner, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), in Uttar Pradesh, it faces a dual, formidable task. It has to regain the confidence of its followers who are disenchanted with the supincness of the party's cabinet ministers during the six-month rule of BSP chief minister Mayawati, and at the same time keep the BSP in good humour so as to sustain the alliance. With the BJP expecting a midterm poll to the Lok Sabha early next year, its alliance with the BSP in UP is vital to its game plan for capturing power at the centre.
