After 50 years of independence in which we cano boast of a number of Indians who have carved a name for themselves in the international arena we can now look forward to a future where we can say goodbye to intellectual rigour, integrity and independence of thought and prepare ourselves to perpetually accept the lead of the west in matters intellectual. It is then that we will come face to face with the denouement of the lesson that the Rastogi Committee has tried to teach the teaching community: close down our institutions of higher learning for they would truly be of no further use to society.
