There is, however, one gap which comes in the way of comparison of the findings of the RBI studies over time. Each block of sample studies contains comparable data for only three years. This is understandable considering the enormity of the work involved if the data were to be presented for longer periods for the same set of companies, but as a result the studies do not lend themselves to comparison of trends over longer periods. If the RBI were to attempt instead population estimates for major segments of the corporate sector, long-term series would have been generated. The need for such population estimates is all the more pressing in respect of public limited and private limited companies as independent and major groups of the private sector.
