Iodine Obsession YOUR note (December 30) on salt iodisation makes out a case against Universal Salt Iodisation (OSI) programme in the country when you say "For one thing non-iodised salt manufactured from sea water contains about 6 per cent iodine and it is only rock salt which is totally lacking in iodine. It is a moot question if doubling the content of iodine in this salt, as being done through iodisation, was necessary at all for entire populations even in goitre endemic regions." We will have to understand the politics, economics and the logistics of salt iodisation programme in the country before we pass judgment on this seemingly simple goal of USI that India is pursuing.
