Muslim Society in South Asia

Nasreen Fazalbhoy Muslim Communities of South Asia: Culture, Society and Power edited by T N Madan; Manohar, New Delhi, 1995. THE book under review is a revised and expanded version of articles published in Contributions to Indian Sociology in 1972. The articles have been written at different times, and with different concerns and per- spetives, but the editor has identified three broad themes as emerging in the collection: attributes of cultural identity, modes of social organisation and dimensions of power. These themes are distributed throughout the book which is organised by country. Pakistan (three articles), Bangladesh (two), Nepal (one), India (six) and Sri Lanka (two).
