Employment Guarantee Scheme Meeta Rajivlochan S MAHENDRA DEV's review of the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) in Maharashtra ('Alleviating Poverty', EPW, October 14-21, 1995) requires careful scrutiny since much of it is based on data from the 1980s. Over the years there have been many changes in the actual practice of the EGS which render, from a contemporary perspective, the author's review suspect on many counts. He is factually incorrect about many of the problems that he notices in the implementation of the EGS, makes a number of incorrect presumptions in evaluating the functioning of the scheme and seems to be too casual about some of the problems that, if not resolved soon enough, might result in serious setbacks in the functioning of the EGS in the future.
