wholesale prices in the current financial year up to November 4 has been lower at 4.7 per cent (compared with the 6.4 per cent rise in the same period last year), prices of a large number of commodities have been rising continuously on top of the large increases last year. The index for 'food articles' has risen by 9.1 per cent on top of a rise of 11.9 per cent in 1994-95. Though seasonal, the rise of 78,4 per cent in vegetable prices so far this year has far exceeded the rise of 49.6 per cent last year. In tea and coffee the rise has been 24.5 per cent this year on top of a 49.8 per cent rise last year. But for the subdued price trend in some intermediate and capital goods, the inflation rate would have been higher still.
