WEST BENGAL-No Place for the Poor

in ignoring the grievances of the dalit poor.
The Dauna incident was preceded by the mass rape of a dalit woman in Hamir- pur in Uttar Pradesh and a violent clash between the dalits and the OBC Kurmis at Fatehpur. It has been followed by the latest casteist conflagration in Benaras, sparked by the killing of a BSP leader Within hours of that, three upper caste people were gunned down. This was believed to be a retaliatory action. In a counter-move, upper caste students started a rampage, setting fire to houses of dalits. It is quite evident that what is happening in Benaras is nothing but inter-caste conflict marked by bloody acts of vengeance and reprisals. The SJP and BSP leaders must tone up the administration and punish those guilty of atrocities on the dalit people as well as those responsible for starting the riots. The SJP leaders in particular will have to take action against members of their vote-bank, the OBC gangsters who appear to be playing an in creasing role in anti-dalit violence.
