A R Desai

A R Desai A R DESAI was one of the most prominent Marxist sociologists in the country and his death on November 12 is an irreparable loss to the academic community. He published several works of outstanding quality and I am sure that most of these will be referred to by scholars for generations. His first major work, The Social Background of Indian Nationalism, was based on his PhD dissertation and was first published several decades ago but still remains one of the most outstanding sociological interpretation of Indian society. A R Desai was also a leading figure in human rights. He had the ability to interact with the myriad human rights' groups and he was often referred as the 'watershed' of the human rights movement in India.
