After independence, caste distinctions were abolished and their practice in any form forbidden. But a simple stroke of the pen could not change an age- old institution, so deeply entrenched in social tradition and administrative procedure. In the same way, the Constitution proclaimed India to be a secular state. Yet, violent clashes between Hindu castes, Muslims and Sikhs have become a recurrent feature of daily life.
