Call of December 6,1993

Russian Chauvinism I HAVE some reservations about DN's comment (November 6) on my paper on the nationalities policy in the Soviet Union that I "labelled the small nation opposition to 'Great Russian' chauvinism as 'small nation chauvinism', as though they were all chauvinisms without any justified nationalism of the oppressed nation in them". I believe, I have narrated extensively how the Great Russian chauvinism had provoked the small nation chauvinism all around. But I did not indeed for that reason consider the 'nationalism' of the oppressed nations justified. In this 1 had based myself on the insistent warnings by Lenin. who, among other things, said: "Insofar as thebourgeoisie of the oppressed nation stands for its own bourgeois nationalism, we stand against" (V I Lenin, Collected Works, vol 20, Moscow, 1964, p 412, emphasis in the original).
