EAST INDIA HOTELS-Hoping for Tourist Boom

EPW Research Foundation EAST INDIA HOTELS (EI Hotels) which runs the Oberoi group hotels has the second largest chain of hotels in the country. The company's total income increased by 32 per cent while its net profit rose by 9 per cent in 1992-93. Even the full convertibility of the rupee has not brought much relief to the hotel industry following only 1 per cent increase in tourist inflow which was affected due to the Ayodhya disturbances and the ensuing political turmoil in the country during the last tourist season. However, with the government's increasing emphasis on the promotion of tourism, the hotel industry will be a major beneficiary. The opening of the Oberoi Bangalore, in August 1993, has also contributed to the company's earnings.
