Repatriation of Sri Lankan Refugees THE decision to repatriate Sri Lankan refugees was clinched when the foreign minister of Sri Lanka, Herald Herat, met the prime minister of India during the former's visit to New Delhi to participate in the Indo Sri Lanka Joint Commission meeting in the first week of January. It had been agreed earlier that about 30,000 refugees out of a total of over 2,00.000 had expressed their willingness to be repatriated and about 2,000 of them from the Trincomalee distriet of Sri Lanka were to be repatriated in the first phase of repatriation, including around 1,100 Sri Lankan government employees who are to be reinstated in their employment by the government of Sri Lanka.
