Causes and Portents V Suresh The complete rout of the DMK in the assembly elections in June 1991 has to be understood in terms of the numerous interacting processes: The AIADMK's political campaign which sought to project the DMK as corrupt, anti-woman, immoral and itself as the true successor of MGR; the ideological and political dissonance within the DMK due mainly to the emergence of the Pattali Makkal Katchi; the DMK's developmental and welfare policies which alienated or caused its disaffection among certain sections; and the impact of the AIADMK- Congress(I) alliance which consolidated the anti-DMK votes.
